Rappelling Linville Gorge
Sunday, June 27
Join us for a day in the Gorge while we learn some basic rappelling and climbing skills. This trip will be primarily rappelling but many skills and techniques we use overlap with fundamental climbing skills. This trip is a great way to experience a new activity that challenges you mentally while also enjoying amazing views and the company of a supportive group of women.
WHAT IS RAPPELLING?:
Rappelling is a climbing technique used to descend a rock face or vertical surface. With the use of a harness and rappel device, the climber is in control of how quickly or slowly they’d like to lower themselves down. You will be secured by the use of belay which is a backup system controlled by your climbing instructor.
WHY RAPPELLING?:
Less physically demanding: Rappelling is a great way to experience a form of climbing that doesn’t require as much strength or movement. Great for those who may have mobility issues and physical limitations. We strongly recommend that you still reach out to discuss any physical concerns with your instructor to make sure you can still have a safe and enjoyable experience.
Overlapping skills: Rappelling introduces you to fundamental climbing gear and skills that can overlap in many outdoor activities. Learning basic rope work, knots, and gear can help you excel in other skills
Mental Challenge: While this activity may not push you physically, it will definitely challenge you mentally. The act of backing up over a cliff is an unnatural one and forces us to face our fears and challenge our comfort zones.
Emergencies: Basic rope working techniques associated with rappelling can help you get safely out of a multistory building to the ground, down the side of a mountain, or down from some other height when you need to save yourself.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While rappelling is not as demanding of an activity as climbing, you do need to be a relatively active person to enjoy this trip. The hike to our climbing locations can be technical with some easy to moderate elevation gain. Some locations may require scrambling up short, steep inclines to access the top of the rock face.
