Navigation Hike - Shortoff Mountain
Sunday, December 26 • 8 AM • Shortoff Mountain in Linville Gorge
Join Lead Instructor, Jamie Young, for an on-trail navigation class to learn and practice essential skills of navigation. A map and compass are considered part of the “10 Essentials” but many don’t even know how to use them. During this moderate to strenuous hike, you will get the opportunity to take in some great views while learning this essential wilderness skill. It takes patience and practice to master the skills of orienteering so we encourage those who have taken a class in the past to join us so you can stay on top of your game!
TRIP DESCRIPTION:
The hike up to Shortoff is tough, so you will need to be in good physical shape. Jamie will be guiding you along the main trail up to this iconic plateau along with the occasional spur trail. This hike makes excellent view points to learn how to find and use bearings with your compass using the various landmarks around you. The unique geology of this area make it a great location for understanding topography of maps and how to utilize it when making plans.
