Orienteering

Considered a part of the “10 Essentials” for hiking gear, a map and compass is useless unless you know how to use it. Orienteering skills are not always as intuitive as they may seem and can take a lot of practice to master it and be able to recall the skill in an emergency. Our orienteering course introduces you to the fundamentals and gives you a chance to put those skills into practice.

Topics we cover:

  • Anatomy of a Compass

  • Reading a Topographic Map

  • Understanding & Adjusting Declination

  • Using Bearings to Reach your Destination

  • Learn to Triangulate Your Location

  • Understanding Blazes & Trail Markings

These classes are for women who...

  • are new to orienteering and want to be introduced to the basics

  • have some experience with orienteering and want to practice on the trail

  • are looking to practice map & compass skills in a great location with a lot of topographical landmarks

  • are properly equipped with day hiking gear appropriate for the location and climate of the class
