Navigation Resources

The Goal of Navigation:

We know learning a map and compass isn’t the easiest skill to learn so we don’t expect you to leave the class and head straight to the backcountry. The goal of this class is to get you familiar with the compass and the basic understanding of how to use it with a map. This is a skill that requires practice so be sure to take out your map and compass from time to time on the trail to practice your skills. You’ll want to be confident in this form of navigating in case you ever have to use it in an emergency.

Skills to Practice:

  • Use map topography to define summits and landmarks

  • Learn how to set a bearing to help you navigation to a destination

  • Learn how to use landmarks to triangulate your current position

  • Try to teach this skill to someone else to help you remember
